This will remove all memory of any customized settings that may have been selected by other users, but it ensures that you will be starting from the same settings as we were when we devised the following key-by- key recipes. IMPORTANT! Always turn on the printer and the embosser FIRST and TranSend LAST. Then, reset the printer, embosser and TranSend as follows: Reset the printer by turning it off, then on again. Install paper, if you're planning on print output or print and Braille output. Install paper, if you're planning on exclusively Braille output, and turn it on. Then, to reset it, enter the following on the embosser's keypad: OL Off-line 0.0E Go into Service Menu 95E Load factory settings into NOV-RAM (Memory that stays on even when the power is off) 1E System Reset The embosser will reset. Now direct the embosser to communicate with TranSend by entering on the embosser's keypad : OL Off-line 0.7E Get TranSend settings in Menu #7 1.1E Back on-line; Menu #7 active, reset again TURN ON TRANSEND and enter on TranSend's keypad: OL Off-line 0E Go to the Service Menu 95E Back to factory defaults 1E Reset and return On-Line LAST, CHECK YOUR FILE: If you have a straight text file with no line breaks, you want TranSend to wrap the lines to fit Braille paper, so follow the directions for the Word Wrap ON, 11.3E. If you have used your word processor or translator to make the lines in your file either 40 or 30 characters wide to fit the Braille paper you have, follow the directions for Word Wrap OFF, 11.1E. FROM A TEXT FILE TO BRAILLE AND PRINT TOGETHER You want TranSend to create Braille and Print on the same page, line by line. IMPORTANT! Always turn on the printer and the embosser FIRST and TranSend LAST. Turn on your computer and make sure it is connected to TranSend. Turn on the printer and load the paper. Turn on the embosser. For Romeo RB-20/40/Classic, place top edge of paper just past the die bar. Enter a 5 on TranSend's keypad. Braille will emboss automatically spaced to match the print, line for line. Exit Print & Braille mode by pressing 6E while on line. If the embosser does not finish last page in Braille & print mode, consider adding a blank page to the bottom of the document, either by holding down the PAPER FEED button when the document leaves the print printer or by adding an extra page break at the end when you're preparing the file in your word processor. This gives the embosser tractors something to grip as the last page advances for embossing. If the file does not print or emboss as you expected, it may be that someone else used TranSend and changed some settings. Go to RESETTING FOR A FRESH START at the beginning and try again. FROM A TEXT FILE TO GRADE 1 OR GRADE 2 BRAILLE You have a text file, and you want TranSend to translate it into Braille and emboss it. IMPORTANT! Always turn on the embosser FIRST and TranSend LAST. Turn on your computer and make sure it is connected to TranSend. Turn on the embosser and load the paper. When you're finished, enter 6E on TranSend's keypad to exit Print & Braille mode. MULTI-COPY WITH TRANSEND You've created a file, tested it and you want TranSend to make multiple copies of it. 1. Press TranSend's V key to verify that the unit is on line. TranSend does multi- copying ON-LINE. 2. Make sure your embosser and printer are both on-line (for Print & Braille), your printer is on-line for print, or your embosser is on-line and at top-of-form for Braille. 3. Enter 3.0E on TranSend's keypad to enter Multi-Copy. 4. Copy your file from your computer or Braille 'n Speak with the commands you usually use. 5. Once you know the file has been completely copied, enter the following on TranSend's keypad: 3.1E. This lets TranSend know that you have finished sending your file. 6. Enter 4.(number of copies)E to tell TranSend how many copies to make (the maximum number is 99). Example: To make 10 copies, enter 4.10E. TranSend will then repeat 10 (in the above example) copies of the last TranSend function you set, whether print, Braille, or a combination of both. TranSend can make as many as 99 copies of a document in its memory. The command 3.3E terminates Multi-Copy. TRANSEND BASICS IN REVIEW FILES FOR TRANSEND You can create or convert TranSend files using any word processor. From your word processor, use "Export...", "Save As...", or "Non-Document" to save your word processing file with a NEW NAME as "ASCII text," "Document ASCII," "DOS Text" or "text file" to create TranSend files. This type of file can also be edited in word processors that are not the same as the ones that created them. They are generic, "vanilla" files. They can be read and edited by virtually any word processor, posted on the Internet, pasted into e-mail or read by Braille notetakers. When we say FORMATTED text files, we mean that you set the line breaks yourself (recommended) when you saved the text file from your word processor to fit the Braille paper you happen to have. IMPORTANT! Braille is very, very large. The number of braille characters that will fit on a line is THE single most important constraint you face in planning your documents. First, change the font of the entire document to a standard 12-point, 10-pitch monospaced courier-style (fixed or "typewriter style") font. Next, change the margins to the settings below. WIDE BRAILLE PAPER = 40 CHARACTERS OF TEXT AREA in traditional DOS editors, with margins at 0 Left and 40 Right Or 4 INCHES OF TEXT AREA in WordPerfect or Windows, with margins at 0" Left and 4.5" Right. NARROW BRAILLE PAPER = 30 CHARACTERS OF TEXT AREA in traditional DOS editors, with margins at 0 Left and 30 Right Or 3 INCHES OF TEXT AREA in WordPerfect or Windows, with margins at 0" Left and 5.5" Right. Follow these settings, and you'll have a good idea of what your document will look like when processed by TranSend. Remember to choose Word Wrap OFF when transmitting the files to TranSend. If you have a text file with paragraph breaks but no line breaks, that's what we mean by UNFORMATTED text files. Then TranSend must wrap the words to fit the Braille paper. Just choose Word Wrap ON when using TranSend so it will wrap the lines neatly (without breaking any words in the middle) to fit on the page. CONNECTING TRANSEND'S COMPONENTS IMPORTANT! If you're using a surge suppresser to supply power for all three components, (and also, perhaps, or computer or a Braille 'n Speak) plug everything into the same surge suppresser--it's safer for the equipment. TranSend consists of three pieces: TranSend's control unit; a parallel print printer; and a serial Braille embosser. You prepare files in your computer or Braille 'n Speak, then tell TranSend how to process them by entering commands on its calculator-style keypad. TranSend can turn your files into both print and Braille that can fit on the same page line by line, or print alone, large print alone, or Braille alone, either grade 1 or grade 2. TranSend communicates back with you through synthetic speech and a visual display, which is located just above the keypad. Here's how to connect and use TranSend's components. CONNECTING AND USING THE PRINTER WITH TRANSEND To connect TranSend to the print printer, take a parallel cable, insert the male end into the Parallel Out connector on the right side of TranSend, and connect the other end to the print printer's port, found at the rear of the printer. Then, face the printer to load paper and experiment with the controls. Stack paper in the rear of the printer and insert the first sheet securely into the tractors, with the leading edge facing down. Locate the paper thickness adjustment lever on the top left side. Move to setting #3 (which is in the middle) to allow enough space for the Braille paper. Locate the paper path direction indicator lever on the top right side of the printer. Move this lever forward to the second click, which is the third of four possible settings. This tells the printer to move the rear tractors in a forward direction. Now that the paper is loaded, turn the printer power on by pushing the large button farthest to the right. DO NOT adjust the paper location with the side roller. There's a much easier way. Paper flow is controlled instead by the three small buttons on the front of the printer. The PAPER FEED button is the lower one on the right. Paper in the tractors will automatically move forward to the correct printing position when you press it. When you want to tear off a sheet at the conclusion of a print job, press the top right small button, PAUSE/TEAR-OFF. Paper advances about three inches--just enough to tear the paper easily and smoothly at the perforation. Press PAUSE/TEAR-OFF again to return the paper automatically to the correct printing position. Should the printer ever jam or misfeed (which might throw off the automatic paper positioning), reset it by holding down the left bottom button, FONT/ALT, at the same time as you touch PAPER FEED on the lower right. This 2-button combination makes the paper retreat backwards in the tractors to set a new top-of-form. Touch PAPER FEED again to roll paper forward and set the new top-of-form in the correct position. CONNECTING AND USING THE EMBOSSER WITH TRANSEND To connect the embosser, connect the serial cable to the Serial Out port on TranSend's right side. The other end of the serial cable goes into the serial port on the embosser. If you're experienced with Enabling embossers, you know that we use a "menu" system built into the keypad to store the settings for different formats and computer connections. If this is new to you, our embossers need the menus because they work with many different types of computers and software. Keeping all those choices available means that there are over 30 individual items per menu. To avoid keying in a large number of changes each time someone uses the embosser for a particular task, the embosser remembers all the latest menu settings, even when the power is off. A typical Enabling embosser has sixteen possible menus, eight of which arrive from the factory preset for the most popular computer connections. These include a special TranSend menu, which is always MENU #7. First install paper in the embosser. Stack the paper in front of the embosser and lock the edges of the paper into the embosser's tractors, positioning the paper path as far to the left as is practicable. For embosser models RB-20/40 and Romeo Classic, roll the paper forward until the leading edge is just under the die bar, because this model will start every new page of Braille in the same position as the first sheet when power is first turned on. Turn the embosser on. Then enter the following on the embosser's keypad to get MENU #7 to work with TranSend. OL Go Off-line 0.7E Get MENU #7 for TranSend 1.0E Make TranSend's settings come on every time the embosser is turned on and 1.1E Make them active now The embosser will reset. All embossers except RB-20/40's and Romeo Classics also have a way to remember where to start the Braille on each sheet–a top of form sensor, similar to the paper controls on the Epson printer. Enter the following on the embosser's keypad to set top-of-form in the embosser's memory, which makes sure the embosser counts lines correctly during printing: OL Go Off-line 2E Set Top-of-Form The embosser resets, this time with the paper in the right position. CONNECTING YOUR COMPUTER TO TRANSEND If you are sending files from your computer, after you prepare the files, check to see if your computer's parallel port is already connected to a printer. If it is, remove the parallel printer cable from the printer, and insert the plug into the left side of TranSend. It goes into the Parallel In port, which has two small restrainers, one on either side. CONNECTING YOUR BRAILLE 'N SPEAK TO TRANSEND Connect Braille 'n Speak to TranSend's serial-in port, which is on the left side as you face the machine. Use the Braille 'n Speak to 25-pin female cable. If you do not have this cable, add a "gender bender," female on both sides (and commonly available at computer stores) to the standard Braille 'n Speak to 25-pin male cable. Plug the other end of the gender bender into TranSend's serial-in port. Set these parameters in your Braille 'n Speak: Baud Rate 9600 Stop Bits 1 Data Bits 8 Hardware Handshaking No parity Connect TranSend to the printer and the embosser. Braille 'n Speak users also need to make a few special adjustments to the embosser's settings. Turn on the embosser and reset it back to its defaults by entering the following on the embosser's keypad: OL Go Off-Line 0.0E Go to the Service Menu 95E Restore factory defaults 1E Reset and return On-Line Enabling embossers come with a built-in TranSend-compatible menu, which we'll use with a few adjustments for Braille 'n Speak, but first, cover the "paper-out" sensor on the embosser with a piece of paper. That stops that "paper-out" tone while setting the menu. With RB-25, Thomas, Paragon, ET, Juliet, BookMaker, & Braille Express embossers, enter on the embosser's keypad: OL Off-Line 0.7E Get TranSend's menu 11.0E Turn the Perf Skip off 12.0E Paper-Out Detector off 30.02E Start 2/10ths of an inch from the top 1.1E Make these settings active now With Romeo RB-20/40/Classic embossers, enter on the embosser's keypad: OL Off-Line 0.7E Get TranSend's menu 11.0E Turn the Perf Skip off 12.0E Paper-Out Detector off 1.1E Make these settings active now Now remove the paper covering the paper-out detector. If you will be using the embosser only with TranSend and Braille 'n Speak, these settings are something you'll need to do only once the first time you use the system. If you use the embosser with other computers, however, you'll want to repeat the reset and Menu #7 set- up above when you use Braille 'n Speak with TranSend. SOLVING PROBLEMS TranSend brings together up to four separate devices, making different demands of each one. While the results can be rewarding, the setup and learning period may produce occasional aggravation. Follow these steps to solve most problems quickly: First, check the file. Is it text? Is it formatted (with line breaks) or unformatted (with no line breaks?) Second, are the printer and the embosser CONNECTED, TURNED ON, ON-LINE, and set for TranSend BEFORE you enter any commands on TranSend's keypad? TranSend sends initialization characters to both printers to control print size, Braille spacing and other important features. If the printers are off when TranSend sends commands, none of the features you are expecting will happen. REMEMBER, ALWAYS TURN ON THE PRINTER AND THE EMBOSSER FIRST, THEN TRANSEND. OTHER COMMON PROBLEMS: PRINT PRINTER JAMS. Check the setting on the print head gap adjustment lever. This lever is blue and located on the left top surface of the printer. Set this lever to "3" on the Epson, either by reading the adjacent scale or by sliding this lever all the way forward and back three clicks. PRINT OUTPUT WITH STRANGE LETTER COMBINATIONS. TranSend "thinks" the input file is Braille, because this is the default. To set the input file to print, enter 2E while TranSend is on line and send the file again. PRINT OUTPUT WITH UNUSUAL SYMBOLS THROUGHOUT. If you see equal signs, less than and greater than symbols, brackets and braces, backslash, underline and slash characters, commas at the beginnings of words, and single digit numbers at the ends, TranSend thinks the output should be Braille. Some words may look completely correct, while others will be have just one unusual character somewhere in the sequence. Enter TranSend's translator menu (OL, 3E) , and select one of print output choices--9.0E for small print, 9.3E for large print, 9.7E for large print with tighter line spacing. RANDOM CHARACTERS FROM THE PRINTER. If there is truly no pattern to the characters which appear on your printer, the fault probably lies in one of your parallel cables. Turn off everything and switch TranSend's two parallel cables. If the random output disappears, the problem was probably a loose cable. If not, one of the cables has probably developed a broken wire or connector pin. Use trial-and-error to find the bad one and replace it. NO OUTPUT IN THE EMBOSSER. The serial cable may be loose. First check the cable connections. If this doesn't cure the problem, the embosser may be in the wrong menu. The factory default menu for Enabling embossers is Menu #1, which is a parallel menu. To reset it to communicate with TranSend, take the embosser off line and enter 0.7E, 1.0E, and 1.1E on the embosser's keypad. The embosser will now be set for communication with TranSend's Serial Out port whenever you turn it on. UNUSUAL LETTER COMBINATIONS AND NO CONTRACTIONS IN THE BRAILLE. If you are trying to make grade 2 Braille on TranSend, and the input file selection is Braille instead of print, TranSend is translating your file the wrong way around. While TranSend is on line, enter 2E. The prompt should read and say, "input file is print." IN GRADE 1, A FEW CHARACTERS ARE MISSING AT THE END OF SOME LINES. This was probably a formatted text file created for 30 or 40 characters per line. This would normally work perfectly in Braille, but grade 1, depending on capitalization and number signs, may actually add a few more characters than the original print. Reformat the text file for 25 to 35 characters per line to allow for these additional grade 1 characters.
